AUTOGIRO CENTENNIAL PROJECT
The project consists of designing, building and flying a replica of the C-4 autogiro in order to commemorate the first flight of a Rotary Wing aircraft, showing the gyroplane in aeronautical events and thus disseminating the creation of Juan de la Cierva, author of the largest Spanish contribution to aeronautics and the Getafe Airfield, where this historic feat was carried out.
Project phases—
Desing
Flight testing
International rotary wing meeting
Phase 1-
DESIGN, AUTHORIZATION BY AESA AND CONSTRUCTION OF A C4 AUTOGIRO REPLICA
Design, authorization of the DGAC (AESA) and construction of an autogiro replica of the C-4, with the use of as many modern materials as possible, but without losing either its appearance or its basic characteristics. (Construction authorization and design obtained, construction started).
BASIC PRINCIPLES FOR THE CREATION OF C-4 REPLICA
- To replicate as faithfully as possible, the original C-4.
- Maintain the principles and patents of the autogiro de la Cierva.
- Only will be made the minimum modifications, for the sake of safety in flight.
- Current engine and propeller.
- Current instruments and radio, but with an appearance of the time.
- Landing gear: shock absorbers, current brakes.
- Classic materials: wood, entanglement.
- Modern rotor based on the patent of Juan de la Cierva, nº 100595 of December 1926.
PITCH AND ROLL CONTROLS
- The original mounted conventional aircraft controls with a fixed rotor. The mounted rotor, although it would allow direct control, will be installed fixed as in the original.
- The control system will limit the control authority at low speeds and limit its ability to operate in crosswinds.
- Flight tests and final adjustments will determine the safe flight envelope.
POWER PLANT
Verner radial engine of 80 hp the closest thing to the Le Rhone of 80 hp original.
STARTING POINT
- There are no original plans, but there are historical photographs and access to original documentation of La Cierva, the basis for the design of the replica.
- We have the Club de Ultraligeros de Getafe’s facilities for its assembly in Camarenilla airfield (Toledo).
- Our team is integrated by Aeronautical Engineers, test pilots, and expert assemblers of aeronautical structures in wood, coatings and aeronautical mechanics.
Phase 2-
FLIGHT TESTING AND OPERATION AUTOGIRO REPLICA C4
Flight tests, modifications if needed, creation of the flight and maintenance manual, as well as related operational procedures and first public exhibition flights. Normal flight operation of the gyroplane, scheduling of public exhibition flights in Getafe (January 17, 2023, centenary of the first flight) and Cuatro Vientos (January 31, 2023, centenary of the homologation flight in Cuatro Vientos).
Future use of the replica will depend on its actual flight capability. If its flight characteristics are satisfactory enough, it will be exhibited to facilitate its public dissemination. When not in flight exhibits it will be exhibited in static exhibitions to be determined.
Progression in the construction of C4
Start of construction in Camarenilla (February 2022)
Landing gear (May 2022)
Manufacture and gluing of the fuselage and stabilizer ribs (March 2022)
Stabilizers (April 2022)
Crowdfunding
For this purpose we have established three levels of participation in which we establish amounts to access each level.
We detail them below.
Level 1
Collaborating partner C4 centenary
All partners have the right to visit us and see the progress of the project and attend the centenary events.
Among level 1 partners, a 15-minute autogyro flight will be raffled to take place in Camarenilla
Level 2
Centennial C4 Special Partner
All partners have the right to visit us and see the progress of the project and attend the centenary events.
Tier 2 members will be entitled to a 15-minute outreach flight on a gyroplane./p>
Level 3
Honorary Member C4 centenary
All partners have the right to visit us and see the progress of the project and attend the centenary events.
Level 3 members will be entitled to a gyroplane outreach flight and a souvenir.

The Autogiro
The Autogiro is the greatest Spanish contribution to aviation. Since the achievement of motorized flight by the Wright brothers, it is the only case of design, creation and development of a totally new, original and different flight system: the Rotary Wings.
